This ultra-rare Greek edition is out of print. In 1989 several of the releases from the Independent Project and Nate Starkman & Son labels were licensed to Greece, where they were produced in limited editions with changed cover artwork and numerous interesting inserts. Only 500 numbered copies of this record were made, and only a few made it over to the USA. This edition features completely different artwork from the US edition, as well as a full-color lyric insert, a mini-poster and a small booklet of non-perforated stamps made for the band.

A metaphor: "The circus has two levels. First of all, it has the level: 'under the Big Top', three rings, beautiful women, animals, horses, glitter, feats of daring-do, and it's rapidly moving and catching your eye. But beneath all that the circus is mysterious. It's erotic. It's dark. The lives of the performers away from the lights are very complicated. It's an old tradition of an out-class group, rooted in nomadism and magic." - Terrence McKenna.

To encounter something interesting and peculiar about yourself, time and nature, it would behoove you to write: Lux Natura, 2140 Shattuck Ave., Box 2196, Berkeley, CA 94704.

The song Cheery Orchard is the only Shiva Burlesque track that has Grant Lee Phillips on vocals. It's produced by Paul Kimble. Grant Lee Phillips: vocal, guitar. Paul Kimble: bass, backing vocal. Joey Petters: tablas, toy xylophone.

My deepest gratitude goes to my wife, Denise, and to our families - the bedrock. The gratitude extends to Tommy and Sharon for their tireless attention to the details of my work. Additionally, ever thankful am I, for folks like Flanagan, the home we call Largo, and the colorful spirits who haunt it. Fortunate am I, to find safe harbor among such an inspiring tribe, be they scattered about the City of Angels, the bungalows of North Hollywoodland (Kendra and David), or even in orbit, as my pirate comrades often are. My many thanks to Phil and Bill for their good souls, and fast fingers. A debt of thanks to my mentors and brethren, Michael Stipe and Robyn Hitchcock, who have taught by example, what it means to follow a vision. I also wish to express my utmost respect and appreciation for the many professionals who continue to play a roll in the integrity, longevity and maintenance of my work, as well as to those who I will always cherish no matter whose roof we're under (Thank you Rick Greaten, Stephen Walker). Warm regards to my labels, both at home and abroad; Zoe/Rounder, Cooking Vinyl and Liberation for the faith invested, for the opportunity to create and share this album. Finally, I thank all of you, holding this album in hand, having managed to follow me down a twisting stretch of road who knows where. I thank you for making these songs your own, for simply lending an ear.
Most Positively yours, Grant-Lee Phillips, 2001

I'll try to wrap it up nicely in one bright package, this accumulation of songs, years, sweat and dreams. All of these shared among myself and my bandmates, Paul Kimble and Joey Peters. Grant Lee Buffalo was our band name - and the sum total force of our efforts for the better part of a decade.

The 1990s saw the underground uprooted and the mainstream flooded when, for one golden moment, no one seemed to be at the wheel. Our own history was rooted in Los Angeles. The end of the '80s with Shiva Burlesque - part band, part lodge. For every show we played, we must have held 30 rehearsals. Those humid evenings would often disintegrate into long-winded talks n the Marx Brothers and Aldous Huxley, and the hidden parallels that lay between them. My role was primarily that of guitarist, co-songwriter and co-conspirator. Jeffrey Clark (from my hometown of Stockton, Calif.) was the band's singer and main lyricist. Drummer Joey Peters brought with him and original style the was at once subtle, intuitive and also extremely dramatic. Our musical marriage was a spontaneous one, and suspect that our influence on one another's development is apt to be indelible.

Two years into this journey I met Paul Kimble. Paul had traveled the farthest, from Freeport, Ill. His demeanor was thoughtful, reflective and, as I would eventually learn, positively maniacal. (I mean that in the sweetest way.) Most important, we clicked - especially Paul and I. But when the three of us came together we tapped into something transcendent. Shiva Burlesque had brought us together, but our power as a trio would change our lives.

Moonlighting under a different band name for every show, we began to explore the songs that were gushing out of me during my mid-20s. Rex Mundi would perform one night, followed by the Machine Elves the next. These bands, as well as a few others, had a whole lot in common - we were all of 'em. Yearning to step forward with the songs I was writing, I needed the security of a veil to fully accept my lot as a performer. Grant Lee buffalo was precisely that. It provided me with the strength and the camaraderie of a pack and allowed me the freedom to be vulnerable as an artist.

Question of who are, who is and what is Grant Lee Buffalo still seem to be abound. Within our little world, the axis was forever shifting. A demo recording of Fuzzy was picked up by Bob Mould's Singles Only Label in the summer of '92, and before too long was gathering significant airplay at Boston's WFNX. In October of that same year we signed a recording deal with Slash Records. The same acoustic-based song that blazed its way to Beantown hurled us in stark contrast to the climate of the day. Perhaps that's my lesson - stick to the back roads, the hounds won't catch us if we cut through the stream.

Within a year we went on to create Mighty Joe Moon, which gave us our first real exposure in the US. We toured at breakneck speed, headlining throughout the world and frequently supporting some of the most highly regarded artists of our time, including R.E.M. out adventures were as volatile as they were beautiful. On record, we rejoiced in the task of creating a lasting album. That was the conquest at hand.

Onstage, however, our collective shadow would emerge, the music sometimes approaching assault. I can only regard this phenomena as reactionary. A kind of unconscious response to the teetering balance our lives were suspended in, struggling with this new profession. The demands, the sacrifices and the expectations which the three of us heaved upon ourselves, both on tour and in the studio, eventually collected their tax. During and interview in Brussels for our third album, Copperopolis, a journalist asked innocently, "How long will Grant Lee Buffalo" continue?" Ironically, Paul Kimble responded with, "Seven years …give or take, we burn pretty brightly." Within three years of that interview, Paul and I parted ways. Paul was invaluable, both as a musician and as the producer of Fuzzy, Mighty Joe Moon and Copperopolis, but the price of success cost us our relationship at the time.

Joey and I continued onward for a fourth and final Grant Lee Buffalo recording, Jubilee. Paul Fox was brought on board to produce the album, which also featured a host of guest musicians - all of them friends, including Jon Brion, Robyn Hitchcock, Michael Stipe and others. I had spent some time that year jammin' off and on with bassist Dan Rothchild at an LA club called Largo. Joey and I asked Dan to help us fill out the basic tracks for the record. Later Grant Lee Buffalo grew to a mighty four piece on the road with the inclusion of Bill Bonk and Phil Parlapiano, who played anything you threw into their hands. Jubilee was well-received, and again the expectations of the labels were high. Nevertheless, I sensed they were beginning to wonder if we'd ever get through finishing school.

By this time the scenery was changing and I was looking for new explorations. This collection, however, seeks to capture a time that won't ever be repeated. These songs live on, my memories linger, master tapes rot. We thought you might want a copy.
